Ocean Upwelling : Observations , Analytical Modelingand Numerical Simulation

چکیده
Traditionally, ocean upwelling has been studied mostly from observational data and analytical models of simpliied ow situations. In many areas of (geophysical) uid dynamics, numerical analysis has gradually gained importance and caught up with, if not bypassed, experimental simulations or observations. But, recent laboratory experiments show the very complicated nature of upwelling fronts and instabilities generated at these interfaces. So far, simulating the instabilities numerically has proven too diicult for existing models and computer hard{ and software. Three{dimensional simulations of the full Navier{Stokes equations with turbulence modeling has now come into reach however. New eeorts are being made to tackle this complex uids application.

Numerical Simulation of Internal Kelvin Waves and Coastal Upwelling Fronts*
Two three-dimensional primitive equation numerical ocean models are applied to the problem of internal Kelvin waves and coastal upwelling in the Great Lakes. One is the Princeton Ocean Model (POM) with a terrain-following (sigma) vertical coordinate, and the other is the Dietrich/Center for Air Sea Technology (DIECAST) model with constant z-level coordinates. The sigma coordinate system is part...
متن کاملNumerical Model Simulations of Continental Shelf Flows off Northern California
The three-dimensional circulation on the continental shelf off northern California in the WEST (Wind Events and Shelf Transport) experiment region during summer 2001 is studied using the primitive equation Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS). The simulations are performed with realistic topography and initial stratification in a limited-area domain with a high-resolution grid. Forcing consist...
متن کاملExact Solutions for Wind-Driven Coastal Upwelling and Downwelling over Sloping Bathymetry
The dynamics of wind-driven coastal upwelling and downwelling are studied using a simplified dynamical model. Exact solutions are examined as a function of time and over a family of sloping topographies. Assumptions in the two-dimensional model include a frictionless ocean interior below the surface Ekman layer, and no alongshore dependence of the variables; however, dependence in the cross-sho...
متن کاملUpper Ocean Response to Typhoon Kalmaegi and Sarika in the South China Sea from Multiple-Satellite Observations and Numerical Simulations
We investigated ocean surface and subsurface physical responses to Typhoons Kalmaegi and Sarika in the South China Sea, utilizing synergistic multiple-satellite observations, in situ measurements, and numerical simulations. We found significant typhoon-induced sea surface cooling using satellite sea surface temperature (SST) observations and numerical model simulations. This cooling was mainly ...
متن کاملTropical Atlantic variability in a coupled physical–biogeochemical ocean model
A three-dimensional ocean biogeochemical model of the tropical Atlantic Ocean was run for more than half a century (1949–2000) in order to characterize the ocean biogeochemical response to variable forcing over this period. The seasonal cycle in the equatorial upwelling zone agrees reasonably well with observations and other published simulations but underestimates phytoplankton biomass under s...
